The University of Oxford’s BioEscalator is committed to providing an accessible web presence that gives members of the public and members of the University and BioEscalator community full access to BioEscalator information and activities offered publicly through the web.
This accessibility statement applies to www.bioescalator.ox.ac.uk and the pages contained within this domain. This website is managed by Fry-IT and the BioEscalator.
OUR AIMS
We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:
- Navigate the website using speech recognition software
- Listen to the website using a screen reader
- Zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen and view all content by vertical scrolling only.
- Read video transcripts of the videos and descriptions of images
- We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.
- Our colour palate conforms to the readability regulations

HOW ACCESSIBLE THIS WEBSITE IS
We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:
- You cannot currently read our PDFs
- Some of our image links are duplicated and so redundant
- It is difficult to magnify the map on our ‘contact us’ page using the keyboard but we have provided our full address and contact details next to the map, alternatively you can call 01865 618800 or email us at bioescalator.reception@medsci.ox.ac.uk for directions.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION ABOUT THIS WEBSITE’S ACCESSIBILITY
The BioEscalator is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.
COMPLIANCE STATUS
This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.
NON-ACCESSIBLE CONTENT
The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.
The profile images of the team do not have an alternative text, the name and title of the person is listed below the image.
All other images have alternative texts however text alternative for the Images in the listing pages of the news, events and community are not visible to a screen reader. The text alternative is read when you click onto the link to open up the page that the image relates to, and all essential information included in the image is clearly stated on the listing page. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.1.1 (non-text content). This will be rectified by 23rd March 2021.
Redundant and empty links present on the header bar need removing. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.4.4. Link purpose (in content). This will be rectified by 23rd March 2021.
DISPROPORTIONATE BURDEN
We do not consider any of the accessibility issues to be a disproportionate burden and aim to make the site fully compliant by September 2021.
INTERACTIVE TOOLS AND TRANSACTIONS
Some of our interactive forms are difficult to navigate using a keyboard because the form labels are not descriptive enough and may not make it clear what information to provide in the form. This will be rectified by 23rd March 2021.
Our site contains an interactive map that has two accessibility issues; the map cannot be easily zoomed in and out using one finger and the map description is confusing and does not make it clear that it is an interactive map.
CONTENT THAT’S NOT WITHIN THE SCOPE OF THE ACCESSIBILITY REGULATIONS
PDFs and other documents
The accessibility regulations do not require us to fix PDFs if they’re not essential to providing our services. However, we do plan to make our PDFs readable with a screen reader, or replace them with a document format that can be read by a screen reader by 23rd March 2021.
Any new PDFs or Word documents we publish will meet accessibility standards.
Live video
We do not plan to add captions to live video streams because live video is exempt from meeting the accessibility regulations.
PREPARATION OF THIS ACCESSIBILITY STATEMENT
This statement was prepared on 22nd September 2020.
This website was last tested on 22nd September 2020. The test was carried out internally by the BioEscalator.
We tested all our main header link pages and all the pages that give essential information about the BioEscalator including the news pages, we then took a sample from the ‘community’ page as all of these have the same layout and functionality.
