Scientist/ Senior Scientist- Cell Biology Oncology/Immunology

Alchemab Therapeutics Ltd

The Company

Alchemab Therapeutics is an exciting, big ambition, fast-paced therapeutics biotech company. The company brings together cutting-edge technologies including antibody repertoire profiling, deep learning and PhIP-Seq and has world-leading expert Founders and management team.  Alchemab is initially focused on the areas of oncology, neuroscience and immunology.

Alchemab aims to be a transformational antibody therapeutics company with a broad pipeline of internal and partnered novel targets & candidates. The company is based in Cambridge, but with research activity in Oxford, and London. This role is based in Cambridge, on the Babraham Research Campus.

The Role

The Scientist/Senior Scientist will be a broad ranging laboratory-based role and will help to expand our translational biology workstream and bring additional oncology expertise to derive pre-clinical value from Alchemab’s platform technology. Working closely with the Scientific team, they will build project-relevant in-house capability for a wide variety of cell-based assays. They will utilise flow cytometry expertise and in vitro assay development skills to develop and run phenotypic assays, suitable for both antibody discovery and lead candidate characterisation. Target validation and disease biology understanding will also be a key part of this role. Some laboratory support for Alchemab platform technology may be included, such as next-generation sequencing for bulk and single cells, and flow sorting of cells. As the company grows, the Scientist/Senior Scientist will support the scientific leadership team to build, further coordinate and establish Alchemab’s technology platform & team. The Scientist/Senior Scientist will report to and work closely with the Head of Translational and Clinical Science.

  • Design, perform and interpret discovery assays (Level of direction required will be appropriate to experience level)
      • Use blood cell purification/characterisation and primary tissue cell extraction/purification, as well as standard cell culture lines
      • Optimise high throughput assays, such as binding assays (ideally washed and homogeneous assay formats)
      • Devise oncology/immunology relevant functional assays (e.g. proliferation, migration, cell killing, cell marker expression, cell differentiation etc.) and use for antibody discovery in a phenotypic assay format
  • Support target validation, disease biology (including CRO in vivo study support) and biomarker efforts as projects progress
  • Work collaboratively with the team including collaborating external academic research groups, in Oxford, Cambridge, and elsewhere
  • Provide technical oversight to Contract Research Organisations and contribute to project design for externally delivered antibody characterisation (at experience appropriate level)
  • Communicate efficiently, interpret and summarise data for presentation to different audiences
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date electronic laboratory notebook
  • Maintain assigned laboratory equipment and/or duties
  • Perform all work demonstrating due care and attention to all health and safety and COSHH regulations, and Human Tissue Act records where required
  • Keep current on new discoveries and changes in methodologies and approaches that might enhance Alchemab’s platform
  • Work closely with the scientific leadership team to help build Alchemab’s platform and team

     Experience & Requirements

    • A PhD in a relevant scientific discipline (or viva only pending), or equivalent experience in an industry setting
    • For Senior Scientist level: At least 3 years post-doctoral experience or industry equivalent in oncology or immunology
    • An ability to work independently (or with limited scientific direction at Scientist level), developing, running and trouble-shooting new scientific techniques and experimental protocols
    • Strong background in cell biology/pharmacology/cellular immunology including prior experience performing and designing complex cell assays. Phenotypic assay development a definite advantage
    • An ambition to work with the Alchemab team to build a transformative company
    • A team player who proactively and directly communicates and collaborates with other team members

    • Experience of independently managing projects
    • Experience of working in a collaborative space for example with CROs or independent academic groups
    • Pre-existing network of external scientific contacts of relevance to Alchemab
    • Evidence of contribution to and influence of scientific strategy
    • Experience in an industrial antibody discovery environment, including high throughput screening methodologies
