In its first major refresh since its establishment in 2018, the BioEscalator is delighted to welcome five leading University of Oxford academics and innovators to its Management Board. Professors Catherine Green OBE, Beth Psaila, Molly Stevens DBE, Krina Zondervan and Peter Callow, Financial Controller of the Medical Sciences Division at the University of Oxford. The Management Board provides a source of expertise for BioEscalator tenants and works to enhance research at the University by building strong links with small life sciences companies.

Orfonyx Bio is looking to make its mark as a leader in protein upregulation for clinical benefit – and has made technical progress towards this goal over the past two years. In that time as a BioEscalator tenant the University of Oxford spin-out has also grown from two to seven employees, raised an Oxford Science Enterprises-backed seed round and started to understand where its approach might have the greatest clinical impact. Now it’s raising additional funding.
Alethiomics – using Artemis to hunt down blood cancers

Spin-out company Alethiomics, focused on the development of innovative treatments for blood cancers, is Oxford through-and-through. Founded by Clinician Scientists who run neighbouring laboratories at the University’s MRC Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine, seed financed by Oxford Science Enterprises and located at the BioEscalator, the company’s early years have been immersed in the Oxford innovation ecosystem.

OSPT Ltd brings together ideas and experience for ‘astonishing’ success at the BioEscalator

The idea behind antibacterial company OSPT came to CEO and Founder Stephanie Lesage as she talked to haemodialysis patients as part of a research project, when it became clear to her that they had a really deep fear of the development of infection via their catheters. Their concerns were so significant that they almost outweighed the benefits of the dialysis treatment in the patients’ minds.

A seminal study in The Lancet¹ estimates that in 2019 some 4.95 million deaths were associated with bacterial AMR, including 1.27 million deaths attributable to bacterial AMR. Evolvere is tackling this challenging unmet need using a platform combining synthetic biology, bioinformatics, and AI, designing new drugs plus generating AI models for other companies to license.

It started with a brainstorm

Companies start in all kinds of different ways, and for Bioarchitech it was brainstorming that generated the idea behind the enterprise. It is now planning a Series A fundraising to bring its lead candidate to the clinic. Bioarchitech is focused on cancer, developing oncolytic viruses encoding protein immunotherapies for the destruction of tumours, ideally with just one or two doses.
